Chinese Course to Be Offered at JWCC This Fall

The most widely spoken language in the world will be taught at John Wood Community College this fall, beginning Tuesday, August 14.

An introductory Mandarin Chinese course will be offered Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 11:35 a.m. during the fall semester on JWCC’s Quincy campus.  JWCC is the only college in the region offering this valuable course.

The course is designed for students with no background or knowledge in Mandarin Chinese.  Students will develop the ability to listen, speak, read and write Mandarin Chinese with special emphasis on speaking skills.  There are no prerequisites for the course.

“The benefits of learning Mandarin Chinese are significant, especially in the increasingly competitive business world,” JWCC instructor Cindy Wu Williams said.  “At this time, there is perhaps no other more important or complex relationship in the world than that between the United States and China. A second language can open up additional career options in a variety of industries.”

By the end of the course, students are expected to have the elementary ability to converse, read and write on selected topics of daily life, know the differences between the two Chinese writing systems, recognize 200 simplified Chinese characters, master Chinese phonics and tones of the language and build knowledge of traditional and modern Chinese culture, including proper Chinese business etiquette.

Elementary Chinese II will be offered at JWCC in the spring semester to allow student to further develop Chinese language skills and knowledge of the culture.

Williams was born in Taiwan and holds a bachelor’s degree in French language and literature from Tamkang University in Taiwan and a master’s degree in liberal arts and mass communication from Oklahoma City University.  She completed a Teaching Chinese as a Second Language (TCASL) at the National Taiwan Normal University.  Williams has resided in northeast Missouri for more than 20 years and became the first Chinese language teacher in the area.

Individuals interested in enrolling in the Chinese course can contact the JWCC advising office at 217.641.4355 or advising@jwcc.edu.  For more information about aspects of the course, contact Williams at 217.641.4569 or swilliams@jwcc.edu.

Upcoming movie directors and future videogame makers will be in heaven this summer at John Wood Community College Children’s College. John Wood has partnered with Black Rocket Productions to offer four brand new technology programs.    Black Rocket is a well-known technology programming company for kids on the east coast and JWCC is proud to help bring this advanced programming to the Midwest.  Classes are for students ranging from third through sixth grade.

Videos featuring portions of classes can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U45nCjhRqiY&feature=channel&list=UL.

Using cutting-edge software, students can design and model 3D action figures, avatars, cars, planes, dinosaurs or other objects in the 3D Masters course.  In LEGO YOUniverse! Children will choose their favorite LEGO character and star in their digitally-illustrated story.  Students can fight alongside Batman, go into space with Bionicle or swashbuckle with pirates.

Additional Black Rocket courses include Ultimate Claymation during which students can produce a movie using their own imagination and a piece of clay. Children can recreate their favorite scene from Shrek or Chicken Run or invent an original short film.  In 3D Videogame Making students will develop a game concept that goes well beyond the limitations of traditional classes.  Participants will learn the physics behind 3D Game Design and explore scripting, level design and controlling flow of game play.

Cost for the Black Rocket classes are $175 for 16 hours of classroom instruction with trained Black Rocket professionals.

Space is available for interested students. More information can be obtained from JWCC’s Office of Community Education at 217.641.4905.   A registration form and detailed listing of classes, camps and fees may be found on-line at jwcc.edu/community/childrens-college.

JWCC Graduates Outperform Peers in Written Communication and Critical Thinking Skills

John Wood Community College graduates are outperforming their peers in written communication and critical thinking skills.  As part of its continued work to evaluate and enhance student learning outcomes, JWCC has administered Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) tests to graduating sophomores.

On a CAAP writing skills exam testing usage/mechanics and rhetorical skills, a group of graduating sophomores from the Class of 2012 earned an average score of 63.1.  In comparison, the national average of other graduates from two-year institutions was 61.6.

“The fact that our students’ scores are more than a full point higher than the national average indicates that our professors’ focus on writing skills across the curriculum has been successful,” Dr. Ron Davis, vice president for instruction said.  “John Wood students exceed the average of their peers, which prepares them to be a step ahead when entering the workforce or a four-year institution.”

On a CAAP critical thinking test administered to a separate group of graduating sophomores from the Class of 2011, JWCC students earned an average score of 62.2.  Nationally, the mean for all graduating sophomores from two-year institutions was 60.7.

“Critical thinking skills are a must for today’s college students and employees,” Davis said.  “Problem solving in any situation leads to innovation and efficiencies, which are necessary in today’s global marketplace. John Wood is preparing students to excel in this area.”

The CAAP test is a standardized, nationally-normed assessment program from ACT that enables post-secondary institutions to assess, evaluate and enhance student learning and general education outcomes.

New students and prospective students interested in learning more about John Wood Community College’s agriculture, agribusiness, agronomy, animal science, beef and swine specialist programs are encouraged to attend a special orientation and registration session, Thursday, June 21.  The session will be held at the JWCC Agricultural Education Center on Route 104 near Perry beginning at 10 a.m. for those who have completed the COMPASS test.  Prospective students who have not completed the COMPASS testing to meet admission requirements may take the test at 8 a.m.  The event will conclude with course registration at 1 p.m.

Registration is encouraged, but not required.  Contact the JWCC Agricultural Education Center at 217.236.4711 or 217.641.4558 to register or for more information.

The program will include the required COMPASS testing for new students, information about admissions, financial assistance and scholarships.  Details about JWCC’s agriculture courses, certificates and degrees will be shared and University of Illinois representatives will explain the unique opportunities available for JWCC students through the University Orr’s Research Center.  Other presenters will provide overviews of the JWCC Student Government Association, Agriculture Club and Alumni Association.  JWCC academic advisors will be on hand to register participants for fall classes.

The JWCC Agriculture Alumni Association will provide a complimentary lunch at noon.

JWCC fall semester classes begin the week of August 13.  Many classes meet Tuesdays and Thursdays only and students may attend full or part time.  Classes can also be taken individually based on students’ schedules.  The last day of regular registration for fall semester is August 2.

University of Illinois Signs Articulation Agreement with JWCC

John Wood Community College and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) have signed an agreement to facilitate the transfer process for students who begin courses at JWCC and choose to transfer to the University of Illinois College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences (ACES) to complete a bachelor’s degree.

The agreement is designed to minimize duplication of instruction and to build on the community college and university learning experiences.

Under the agreement, any student who has completed the prescribed transfer agreement program at JWCC with a required minimum grade point average (GPA) of at least a 2.50 (individual program GPAs may differ) and submits the required application and supporting documentation will be admitted to the College of ACES, UIUC as a junior in a relevant field of study.

“We are proud to affirm this agreement with the state’s premier agricultural institution of higher education,” Dr. Ron Davis, JWCC vice president for instruction said.  “We have a long-standing tradition of cooperative learning with the U of I in the field of agriculture. John Wood’s rigorous and practical curriculum, expert professors and record of excellent student performance at the U of I led to this agreement.”

The agreement also outlines the specific JWCC courses and GPAs required to transfer into University of Illinois programs including the following; agricultural and consumer economics, agricultural leadership and science education, animal sciences, crop sciences, food science and human nutrition, horticulture, human development and family studies, natural resources and environmental sciences and technical systems management.

In addition to the agreement with the University of Illinois, John Wood is a member of the Illinois Articulation Initiative, which provides guidelines for students to complete courses at JWCC to transfer to all public institutions in the state of Illinois. Beyond the Illinois state institutions, students from JWCC successfully transfer to more than 100 colleges and universities nationwide.

“The agreements in place are all about facilitating the transfer process for students who begin their college career at John Wood,” Davis said.  “The key for students is to plan ahead and talk with our advisors at JWCC to ensure the right classes are taken at the right time.  Our professors provide excellent instruction and prepare students to be successful when they transfer.  In fact, reports from state universities in Illinois indicate that JWCC graduates earn GPAs the same as or higher than students who began at those four-year institutions.”

JWCC Program Helps Manufacturers Tap Talent for Management Roles

Prince Agri Products and Continental Cement recognize opportunity when they see it.  The two regional manufacturers are working with John Wood Community College’s Workforce Development Center on a program to elevate promising employees currently in production roles to management positions within their companies.

“We are always looking for ways to provide training that helps employers develop and enhance the skills of their employees,” Dr. Ron Davis, JWCC vice president for instruction said. “When employers come to us with a need, we work with them to provide a training package to meet that need.”

In this particular case, Prince Agri Products and Continental Cement have identified talented employees that could fill management roles if provided the right training.

As a result, JWCC developed a business leadership certificate program designed for manufacturing supervisors in conjunction with manufacturers.  It provides students with the knowledge and technical skills for success in supervisory and managerial positions.  Instructors emphasize best practices and techniques used by industry-leading supervisors that include supply chain management, quality assurance, industrial safety and interpersonal communication.

Classes in the 16-credit hour program are a mix of six online and classroom courses that can be taken over three semesters.  The format allows students to maintain their current position while taking classes so new knowledge and skills can be integrated into daily work.  The program is slated to begin this fall.

“John Wood is helping us develop the skills of our manufacturing employees so they can better manage their production teams and drive process improvement,” Tim Costigan, Prince’s vice president for manufacturing, quality and regulatory affairs, said.  “We already have four employees who have committed to the program. I would suspect that other businesses have employees with the potential to become managers too, and John Wood can provide the training to make it happen.”

Jordan Lamm, production leadman for Prince Agri, is excited about the opportunity the program will provide.  “It demonstrates that the company is willing to put time and resources into investing in the future of their employees.  It expresses that the company cares about you as an individual and it’s a great opportunity to further my education and help out the company at the same time.”

Terry Bennett, plant manager for Continental Cement based in Hannibal, Mo., also recognizes the rewards of growing talent within the company.

“We have dedicated employees invested in our company and our community,” he said. “It makes perfect sense to provide the training to help them move up the ladder, which helps our company grow and helps the regional economy.  It’s a win-win-win.”

The business leadership program is just one of many customized training programs JWCC has developed in partnership with area manufacturers, the Workforce Investment Board of Western Illinois and Great River Economic Development Foundation.

“As our region continues to grow, we have seen a significant need for this type of educational offering. We are fortunate to be able to tell area employers that our community college is responding to their needs,” Jim Mentesti, president of GREDF said.

Regional employers or employees interested in the business leadership certificate program can contact Pam Foust, JWCC dean of career and technical education, at 217.641.4956 or pfoust@jwcc.edu for more information.

Record Number of Students Accepted to Practical Nurse Program, 21 Continue Program to Become RNs

Interest has surged for John Wood Community College’s nursing program thanks to a redesigned curriculum that combines practical training and whole-person nursing.

“We are pleased to accept so many new students into the program, but not terribly surprised,” Betty McDonnell, JWCC associate dean of health sciences said. “There’s quite a demand for nurses in our region’s healthcare system and our new program allows students to become an LPN or RN in the most efficient and affordable way.”

The challenging courses and flexible schedules have helped JWCC fill all 80 practical nursing (LPN) openings this fall with qualified students.  Another 21 students from last year will continue into JWCC’s Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program to take courses leading to the registered nurse exam (NCLEX-RN).

Lisa Harker was one of the first eight graduates from the new ADN program this May which is taught in consortium with Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing (BRCN). A current licensed practical nurse with Blessing Behavioral Center, Harker stands to increase her annual earnings after earning her degree and passing the registered nurse exam.

“John Wood’s redesigned nursing program is perfect for working students like me,” Harker said.  “I wouldn’t have been able to complete my studies if it weren’t for JWCC’s program.  The changes that were made were great. Of course there were a few bumps in the road, but all of the professors were overwhelmingly supportive and helpful during the transition.”

The new program design was commended for its innovation by the Illinois Board of nursing and is the first of its kind in the state.  JWCC professors instruct all first year, core, support and elective courses. Blessing Rieman College of Nursing faculty collaborate with JWCC to provide second year nursing courses.  The collaboration between institutions allows for efficient scheduling and students’ seamless transfer into bachelor’s degree coursework at BRCN.

Students completing JWCC’s Associate Degree Nursing program in 2012 were as follows: Stacey Jarrett, Barry; Stacey Broyles, Griggsville; Schanan Kivett, Liberty; Caitlen Wiese, Mt. Sterling; Kyanne Wright, Quincy; Lisa Harker, Canton, Mo.; Angela Davis and Jennifer Tallman of New London, Mo.

Individuals interested in the JWCC nursing program are encouraged to contact JWCC Admissions Office at 217.641.4338 or admissions@jwcc.edu. Course information is available at jwcc.edu/academics/degrees/nursing-adn.

Free Assessments May be Available for Participants

John Wood Community College will host a free informational meeting and luncheon about the WorkKeys job skills assessment program Wednesday, June 27 at noon at the College’s Workforce Development Center located at 4220 Kochs Lane in Quincy.

The WorkKeys program helps employers select, hire, train, develop and retain a high-performance workforce.  It was developed by ACT as a workforce solution that supports skill building and portable credentials necessary for career pathways.  The assessment program appeals to employers trying to avoid high employee turnover among new hires.

Area employers interested in learning more about WorkKeys are encouraged to contact JWCC at217.641.4971 or email mavise@jwcc.edu with their plans to attend the informational meeting.

JWCC is also exploring a pilot WorkKeys program offered by ACT to help the region become “work-ready.”  As part of the program ACT will provide 150 free WorkKeys Career Readiness assessments to businesses in the community.  Additionally, if a minimum of 20 employers sign up, each will receive 20 free tests.

Trustees Approve Tentative Budget Resolution, Includes Cuts in Personnel and Spending

0
0

John Wood Community College Trustees approved a resolution for a tentative $15,046,570 balanced budget for fiscal year 2013, which is $591,530 less than the current year.

Revenue from tuition and fees is expected to decrease by $1.3 million from last year’s budget.  The figure is based on JWCC delivering 48,000 credit hours compared to the 52,500 completed this year. The projections include tuition increasing by $3 per credit hour.

The tuition expense for Illinois Veterans attending JWCC will be covered by the College, which impacts the budget by $200,000.  Previously, the state had partially funded such grants.  Additionally, state operating grants to JWCC will decrease by $240,000.

To balance this year’s budget, JWCC cut overall expenditures and adjusted revenue projections. Four full-time and three part-time positions were eliminated and one full-time faculty position has not been filled. This saved the College approximately $305,000. Operating expenses were cut and raises for staff and administration are not included in the budget. JWCC projects that the state will ultimately make full payment of the College’s allocations. Last year the budget assumed 75 percent payment.

Following a 30 day public review, Trustees will formally adopt next year’s budget during their August meeting.

“Eliminating positions was the last measure considered in the budget process, but unfortunately we had to make tough decisions to live within our means,” Dr. John Letts, JWCC president said.  “The changes should not impact student services and we have many initiatives underway to help enrollment figures improve.”

A special report was given highlighting new integrated marketing and enrollment initiatives.  The projects are focused on increasing relational recruitment of students and data-driven campaigns.

In other business, the Board:

Adopted a resolution by a 5-2 vote to comply with the Prevailing Wage Act which determines the rate for workers employed on public works construction projects at JWCC.

Authorized the write-off of $114,848 in uncollectible student accounts.  The amounts include accounts submitted to collection and accounts with balances less than $25.

Approved updates to Resource Allocation Management Plan (RAMP) documents for a Health and Natural Science Building and outlying facility.  The documents must be on file with the Illinois Community College Board for future long-term construction projects and are updated for inflation annually.  No state funding is available for either project at this time.

The next regular meeting of JWCC Trustees will take place July 18 at 7 p.m. at the Agricultural Center near Perry.

JWCC Lowers Truck Driver Training Fees for Missouri Residents

0
0

Truck driver training fees for Missouri residents are now more affordable at John Wood Community College.  The program format and fee structure for JWCC’s truck driver training classes has been modified to help meet the need for drivers in the region.  As a result, students from Missouri now pay the same amount as Illinois students pursuing careers in the industry.  Previously Missouri residents were required to pay out-of-state tuition costs.

Students can complete the program in just over four weeks. Day classes are four weeks long, with a two or four day pre-session the week preceding class. Students attend classes from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The start date for the upcoming pre-session is July 9, and classes will begin July 16. The following pre-session will start August 20, with the four-week class beginning August 27.

JWCC also offers a 10-week night program, during which students attend class from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and two Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The start date for the next night class is to be determined.

Training begins in the classroom to prepare students to earn a Commercial Driver’s License learner’s permit and learn what is required to become a qualified professional truck driver.  Following initial classroom and lab training, students quickly move up to tractor-trailer rigs.

By driving on all kinds of roads, from city streets and rural two-lane roads to interstate highways, and under the guidance of skilled instructors, students will quickly develop their proficiency. JWCC’s instructors have many years of over-the-road experience, and are kept up-to-date on the latest technologies and training methods.

JWCC’s program is certified by the Professional Truck Driver Training Institute and classes are offered at JWCC’s Workforce Development Center at 4220 Kochs Lane in Quincy, which includes a four-acre maneuvering range and modern classroom facilities.

Tuition for all students is $3,795.  The program is eligible for funding through Workforce Investment Act (WIA) or other public agencies.  Additional fees for physicals, drug screens and license fees will apply.

Individuals interested in JWCC’s truck driver training program can call 217.224.5362 or email lewis@jwcc.edu for more information.

JWCC Adds Lodging Management Option to Hospitality Associate Degree Offerings

College Responds to Needs Expressed by Regional Businesses, Offers More Career Paths for Students

Students at John Wood Community College can now pursue either lodging management or restaurant management as part of their path toward an associate degree in hospitality management.   The College also offers an 18 month certificate program in culinary arts.

“The opportunities in this industry are endless and this new option will only help students better themselves,” JWCC graduate and Hy-Vee Assistant Human Resource Manager Nick Knuffman said. “Hospitality is all about exceeding expectations and customer service.  Tons of career paths are out there for people who enjoy exceeding the needs of a variety of customers.  Students can go into food service, lodging operations, grocery chain administration, distribution, manufacturing and so many other areas.”

Knuffman successfully transferred all of his JWCC coursework to Western Illinois University, where he graduated with high honors in May.

“My restaurant management courses and instructors were outstanding at John Wood. If they offered a bachelor’s program in hospitality management, I would have stayed all four years,” Knuffman said. I interned at the Tan-Tar-A Resort in the Lake of the Ozarks, which gave me an inside view of corporate and private catering and how it coordinates with lodging.  These new courses will take it to another level, which is great.”

The new courses added to JWCC’s offerings are front office operations and lodging facilities management. Existing courses include professional cooking, nutrition, marketing, cost control, service presentation, purchasing, food safety, hospitality law, customer service and hospitality supervision. The program also provides extensive paid internship opportunities for students.

“Our advisory council expressed a need to have graduates trained in both restaurant and hotel management and noted that career opportunities are positive,” Leah Erke, coordinator and assistant professor of JWCC’s hospitality management program said. “It gives our students a more well-rounded experience and helps local employers at the same time.”

Currently, the hospitality industry employs more than 14 million people in the United States.  The Quincy Area Convention and Visitors Bureau reported a total of 1,010 tourism jobs in Adams, Pike and Hancock Counties.  Quincy is home to more than 30 banquet and meeting facilities and 14 hotels or motels and the 102,637 residents in Nauvoo, Pittsfield and Quincy frequent more than 150 restaurants, grills, eateries and bakeries.

Holly Cain, executive director of the Quincy Area Convention and Visitors Bureau knows the regional economic impact of hotels and restaurants and is pleased that JWCC will provide career paths to support both segments of the industry.

“It is a major benefit to have a well-educated local workforce to support this important part of our economy,” she said.  “One in 10 jobs in Illinois is related to tourism, and the Quincy area has been part of that steady growth, generating over $600 million in visitor expenditures over the last 5 years.”

Lodging managers may work at resorts, hotels, motels, cruise ships, bed and breakfast establishments, campgrounds and other hospitality facilities. Restaurant managers may work in a restaurant, country club, catering firm or retail food outlet in addition to hotels and resorts.

More than 20 students are currently enrolled in JWCC’s program, which was created in 1999.

Classes for JWCC’s hospitality management programs start August 13 and an application for admission, course times and information is available at jwcc.edu.  For more information about the program, contact Leah Erke at 217.641.4573 or lerke@jwcc.edu. Next 3D Videogame Making Course Starts August 9

When John Wood Community College offered a 3D Videogame Making course this year, 10 year-old Spencer Fuller jumped at the chance to develop his creativity by using the latest technology.

“I liked how fast you could go and build your game,” Fuller said.  “We worked at our own pace and I did not have to wait for everyone before I got more directions from the teacher.  I hope to come back next year and learn more about making video games.”

Since completing the class during JWCC’s Children’s College in June, Fuller regularly plays the game he created and even taught his brother to play.

JWCC will offer another Black Rocket 3D Videogame Making course for third through eighth graders August 6-9 from 8 a.m. to noon. Instructors can accommodate students at most learning levels.  It is suggested that a child interested in the class be good a reader,  have some computer experience and be able to work independently.

Students will learn to develop a game concept that goes well beyond the limitations of the traditional classes. The class teaches the physics behind 3D Game Design and explores event scripting, level design, controlling flow of game play, and storytelling.

“The class is more about the design of videogames to help students stretch their creative skills,” JWCC Instructor Michelle Todd said.  “It’s not just about playing a video game.”

The videogame making course is one of several Black Rocket Production courses initially offered during Children’s College.  JWCC was the first community college to offer the cutting-edge technology for youth.  More than 10,000 children at 45 campuses have taken Black Rocket courses that emphasize self-empowerment, cognitive reasoning and divergent thinking through hands-on learning.  The company’s motto is, “We think we are preparing kids for tomorrow.  Kids just think it’s cool.”

Registrations can be made by contacting Jenny Sousa at jsousa@jwcc.edu or 217.641.4940. More information is available at jwcc.edu/community/childrens-college.
