Trustees Hear Report on Second Year of Associate Degree Nursing Program Returning to Campus

The John Wood Community College Board of Trustees, meeting in regular session in Quincy Wednesday evening, February 18, received an update on the return of the second year of instruction for JWCC’s Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program from Blessing-Rieman College of Nursing (BRCN) to JWCC’s campus.

JWCC’s ADN program provides preparation for students pursuing a career as a registered nurse.

In May of 2014, Trustees approved a plan to return the second year of nursing instruction to JWCC following a three-year partnership with BRCN. During that time, JWCC ADN students took pre-requisite and first year nursing courses at JWCC.  In the second year, the students received instruction from Blessing-Rieman.

The partnership agreement allowed JWCC the time and resources to revise its nursing curriculum to focus on the preparation of registered nurses in the community college setting.

Lisa Tournear, JWCC administrative chair and assistant professor of health sciences, informed the board that the College received approval from the State Board of Nursing in January to return the second year of instruction to the JWCC campus in the fall of 2015.

The partnership between JWCC and BRCN will transition from one of contractual instruction to one that provides for shared use of state-of-the-art simulation labs and clinical facilities at Blessing Hospital.

“We are extremely grateful to have BRCN’s solid partnership to provide instruction these last few years and for the continued opportunity to share resources to prepare students for careers and seamless transition into bachelor’s degree nursing programs,” JWCC President Mike Elbe said.

The return of the second year of instruction in the nursing associate degree allows JWCC to provide a more affordable option for students.

Nursing programs nationwide include significant lab and clinical costs in addition to base tuition fees.  By providing both years of instruction at JWCC, future students completing the ADN program will save an estimated $5,300, excluding books, uniforms and testing fees. Current tuition, lab and clinical fees for JWCC’s ADN program are approximately $20,000.  Students who enter the ADN nursing program in the fall of 2015 and complete both years will pay an estimated $14,700.

Tournear also shared the most recent National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) pass rates for JWCC nursing students seeking Licensed Practical Nurse and Registered Nurse licenses.

JWCC’s 2012-13 Associate Degree Nursing graduates achieved a 90 percent pass rate on the NCLEX-RN, which is considerably higher than the 85 percent pass rate of the 6,396 candidates who took the exam in the state of Illinois. The national pass rate for the exam was 83 percent.

JWCC’s Practical Nursing graduates from the same year had a 100 percent pass rate on the NCLEX-PN exam compared to the state pass rate of 88 percent and national pass rate of 85 percent.

In other business, the board:

Authorized submission of a four-year $1,575,000 federal grant application to the Department of Education to support personnel and programs that serve first-generation, low-income and disabled students.  JWCC has received the federal grant for the previous 25 years to fund its Student Support Services and TRiO programs.

Approved the change of the April regular Board of Trustees meeting date from April 15 to April 29.

Authorized submission of a grant application of $12,500 for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) to the United Way of Adams County and approved renewal of the United Way of Adams County RSVP partner agreement.

Authorized submission of a grant application of $2,500 for the RSVP program to the United Way of Brown County.

Authorized the appointment of the JWCC director of fiscal services as treasurer of John Wood Community College, District 539 and approved the transfer modification name on the Treasurer’s bonding requirement to the director of fiscal services until July 1, 2015.

Approved the 2015 summer operation schedule. The College will be open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. from Monday, May 18 to Friday, August 7.

Approved a $78,962.94 bid from Alarm Systems of Quincy for installation of hardware and software to upgrade, integrate and unify all video, access control and intrusion alarm systems for JWCC’s Quincy campus as well as Pittsfield, Mt. Sterling and Agricultural Education centers.  The bid was the lowest received that met project requirements.

Authorized submission of a grant application of $53,260 to the Illinois Secretary of State Library and Literacy Office to fund the adult volunteer literacy program.

The next meeting will be held Wednesday, March 18, at 7 p.m. in Quincy.

John Bartz III multimedia

John Wood Community College Heath Art Gallery will feature the works of John Bartz III this spring.  Bartz’s work will be on display March 10 to April 10.  The exhibit is open to the public during regular college hours.

Bartz’s collection features paintings that balance chance and control through the unique pouring of paint and layering of spray paint on aluminum and medium density fiberboard.  A coat of resin completes his process, which results in a slick, wet look that entices the viewer to touch.  The process used in Bartz’s paintings reflect his background in rural Missouri.

“I grew up in an environment characterized by farms, construction sites and factories,” Bartz shares. “Now, I build each piece like a small construction.  I take pride in the creation as evidence of hard work and craftsmanship. “

Bartz holds a Masters in Fine Art in painting from Washington School of Art and was an art lecturer and instructor at Culver-Stockton University in Canton, Mo., before he became an independent contractor for Bartz Construction.

More information about this exhibit is available from Addie Seabarkrob at 217.641.4997 or aseabarkrob@jwcc.edu.

Transport goods where they need to be, when they need to be there, and in the right quantity.  That is the focus of new John Wood Community College supply chain management and logistics degree programs announced today at Dot Foods, Inc., in Mt. Sterling, the nation’s largest food industry redistributor that is rooted in logistical expertise and community values.

Students may enter the new supply chain management programs in fall 2015.

Logistics and supply chain management span numerous industries including warehousing, distribution, transportation, manufacturing and construction. College graduates and professionals in the field are in high demand within JWCC’s district, across the country and throughout the world.  Supply chain professionals find ways to increase productivity and quality while reducing costs.

JWCC is part of a community college consortium that received a federal Mississippi River Transportation, Distribution and Logistics Trade Adjustment Assistance Act grant focused on creating certificates and degrees which lead to careers to support industries along the Mississippi River that transport goods throughout the country and the world.

According to the Council of Logistics Management, expanded international trade, increased cargo entering the country through various ports and manufacturing trends have made logistics the second largest employment sector in the United States. Both U.S. News and World Report CareerGuide and Working Woman magazine have cited logistics as a hot career track.

“As our business continues to experience rapid growth, we need qualified people to lead our supply chain operations in warehouse, transportation, replenishment and sales.” said Dot Foods Vice President of Human Resources Matt Holt. “These degree programs at John Wood Community College and Western Illinois University give students the knowledge and skills necessary to jumpstart their careers after graduation.”

Supply Chain Management Four-Year Transfer Degree

JWCC will offer courses that will transfer into a bachelor’s degree in supply chain management offered by Western Illinois University. Students who begin at JWCC will earn a two-year associate degree in supply chain management, from which all completed courses will be accepted by WIU as part of a 2+2 articulation agreement signed by college officials.

Courses taken at JWCC in the first two years include computer science, statistics, accounting, economics, advanced math and supporting general education classes.  All JWCC courses successfully completed will allow students to transfer with junior status as declared majors into WIU’s Supply Chain program.

“We’re proud to expand our partnership with WIU to offer students the opportunity to begin their degree in supply chain management at John Wood and seamlessly transfer to complete a four-year degree at Western,”   JWCC President Mike Elbe said.  “Our goal is to provide relevant education that ties directly to a career path with excellent salaries and upward mobility. Students can plan a route to career success right here in our district so we can keep local talent to help industry partners like Dot Foods grow business.”

 Logistics Career/Technical Degree

In addition to a transfer degree in supply chain management for students pursing a bachelor’s degree, JWCC will offer a two-year applied associate degree and 16 week certificate program in logistics.  The applied degree contains more hands-on and technical coursework for students to enter the workforce at other area logistics-related companies immediately following graduation from JWCC.

More information about the programs is available from JWCC’s admissions office at 217.641.4314 or admissions@jwcc.edu.

JWCC Workforce Center to Host Business Lunch and Learn

As part of John Wood Community College’s outreach with business and workforce partners, the college will host a lunch and learn program on development and use of employee/personnel handbooks Thursday, March 26, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at JWCC’s Workforce Development Center at 4220 Kochs Lane in Quincy.

Given the growing legal and practical importance of personnel policies in today's workplace, many employers are turning to the use of employee handbooks to implement and communicate the parameters and details of the employer/employee relationship. However, some employers refrain from the use of employee handbooks out of fear that their legal liabilities may actually increase rather than decrease. Carefully prepared and customized handbooks can be an employer's biggest weapon against labor and employment litigation, if properly utilized.

This seminar will assist private and public sector human resource and business professionals in developing effective employee handbooks. Chris Wildrick, who holds a Professional Human Resources certification, will lead a discussion of the components of an effective employee handbook. Wildrick is with Falcon Safety Group, Midwest's leader in human resources, safety and risk management consulting.

Whether a new business or one looking to revise and update, businesses will discover how to create an employee handbook that will serve as an introduction for new employees to the policies, procedures and culture of their company, become a foundation for employee performance management and disciplinary actions, and provide legal evidence that their company's policies are consistent with and encourage adherence to employment laws.

Cost for the lunch and learn is $59, which includes lunch and all training materials. Contact Kelly Lewis, JWCC workforce development specialist, at 217.641.4971 to register. Registrations may also be made at wdc@jwcc.edu.
