WGEM supports the project as an extension of serving the community and partnership with JWCC.

Take the Plunge Day Aimed at Helping Adult Students Start College

$

John Wood Community College wants to help adults “Take the Plunge” to start or continue their college education in the New Year.  JWCC will host “Take the Plunge Tuesday” January 8 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

During the day, adults can drop in or make an appointment to fit their schedule to take action on various steps to go back to or continue college. JWCC admissions and academic advisors can answer questions, help students complete admission and financial aid applications, talk about new career options and complete registration processes. If prospective adult students can bring copies of high school or college transcripts and 2016 tax information, they may be able to complete most processes to enroll in upcoming classes in February and March.

“Adults have crazy schedules and sometimes they just need one day when they decide it’s time to ‘take the plunge’ and get things done.  At this point in the year their children are back in school, so it’s a good time for them to do something for themselves,“ Kristen Ritterbusch, JWCC director of admissions said.

Course sessions for spring begin January 14, February 11 and March 18.

Appointments are encouraged, but not required and can be made by going to www.jwcc.edu/plunge or by calling JWCC admissions at 217.641.4337.

Kathy Flesner, small business owner, and mother of six knew it was time to go back to school when her daughter pushed her to apply for the John Wood Community College Foundation/WGEM Career Makeover last year.

“I’ve wanted to go baKathy Flesnerck for a while, but there was no way I could have gone on my own, full-time with putting three kids through college,” Flesner said.

After winning the competition, Flesner did not have to worry about financing her education. Now she is focused on pursuing her business degree and integrating newly acquired computer, accounting and Excel skills in her family’s small business.

Flesner balances her schedule by making time to do work before and after her classes.

“I was fortunate enough to have all my classes in the morning. So, at night, I don’t watch TV, I do homework,” Flesner said.

Flesner encourages other adults and working moms to apply for the Career Makeover this year.

Nearly 40 percent of John Wood students are adults, like Kathy, who are going to college to gain new skills, a promotion and a better quality of life.

“If you were like me, you thought about applying, but let your fear push it back,” she shared. “Don’t procrastinate, apply and do something for yourself. It is so worth it.”

The deadline to apply is January 19.

More information can be found at www.jwcc.edu/makeover  or 217.641.4109.

2018 John Wood Community College Foundation/WGEM Career Makeover Winner Kathy Flesner is applying new skills learned in business and computer classes to her family business. Flesner encourages other adults to apply to the competition to help them earn promotions, change careers or help their own small business. This year’s competition application is available at www.jwcc.edu/makeover and the deadline is January 19.

Distinction Gives JWCC Graduates Advantage in the Industry

John Wood Community College has been approved as an entitled institution for the Gateways to Opportunity Early Childhood Education, a statewide professional credentialing system that recognizes excellence in preparation of early childhood care providers.

JWCC graduates often own and operate private daycare centers and serve as early childhood instructors in area schools and community child care facilities.  Students can also transfer coursework to four-year universities as part of bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or Education.

"Gateways is the gold-standard for early childhood education providers," Julie Bice, lead instructor for JWCC's Early Childhood Education program said.  "Our graduates will standout to potential employers and have the latest skills and knowledge to provide the highest quality instruction in area child care facilities."

In addition to their two-year degree in early childhood education, JWCC graduates simultaneously earn Gateways Credentialsat Levels 2, 3 and 4.

“The Gateways to Opportunity credential is a solid representation of being qualified in the delivery of early childhood care and education,” Joleen Patton, Blessing Hospital Early Learning Center program director shared.  “I consider a job candidate with this credential to have an advantage.  It shows that the person is serious about the delivery of quality to the children and families he or she serves, and at Blessing Health System, we want their application.”

JWCC is among a select group of institutions in Illinois to be entitled for the Gateways to Opportunity Credentials.  All Gateways credentials have competencies that reflect multiple professional standards, including National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and the Illinois Professional Teaching Standards.  The faculty at JWCC has worked diligently to align their courses with Gateways competencies.

Gateways to Opportunity, Illinois Professional Development System, is designed to provide guidance, support and recognition to practitioners who serve children and families in Illinois.  Gateways is administered by the Illinois Network of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies on behalf of the Illinois Department of Human Services.

JWCC Receives Illinois Community College Board Approval for New HVAC program to Begin this Fall

One-year Certificate Developed with Area HVAC businesses to Meet Regional Demand

The Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) recently approved John Wood Community College’s newly developed Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) one-year certificate program.  The new program will begin enrolling students this fall.

Area HVAC industry leaders expressed a need for more technicians within the community in the fall of 2018.  Over the last year, JWCC worked with an advisory council comprised of eight HVAC businesses and experts to develop HVAC-specific courses, identify internship sites and acquire equipment necessary to deliver the program.

“We have a great need for HVAC technicians in this region, and are grateful that John Wood has worked with us to create a relevant program that will prepare students to step in and earn a head-of-household salary in a growing field,” Ryan Keck, chair of JWCC’s HVAC Council shared.  “Because HVAC businesses were part of developing this new program, we built in extra hands-on internship opportunities so JWCC students will have an advantage and have the inside track as they work in area businesses as part of their training.”

The certificate includes 11 courses and two internship experiences. Five new courses were developed in collaboration with the advisory council and include Refrigeration Fundamentals, Heating Principles, Heating and Cooling Controls and Commercial Air Conditioning Systems.  First semester and capstone HVAC internship experiences were also created.  Five of JWCC’s existing Industrial Maintenance Courses were identified to provide the necessary foundational knowledge for the HVAC program. Those include technical math, wiring, motors/controls, pumps/piping and mechanical systems.  A one-credit college success course will also be required for the certificate.

Businesses on the JWCC HVAC advisory council include Keck Heating and Air Conditioning, Blessing Hospital, AireServ of Quincy, T. F. Ehrhart Company, Air Specialists Heating and Air Conditioning and Klingner & Associates.

The next step in the HVAC program’s development is becoming eligible for Federal financial aid, a process that is currently underway and tentatively set for approval in March.   Students may apply for admission and learn more at www.jwcc.edu/hvac or contact admissions@jwcc.edu or 217.641.4337 for more information.
