The Quincy Medical Group Healthcare Foundation is investing in its regional workforce by donating $5,000 to John Wood Community College’s Serving the Southeast campaign.

The JWCC Foundation fundraising campaign seeks to raise $200,000 for equipment, technology and furnishings for a new facility to serve students in the Southeastern portion of its district, which includes Pike County, and portions of Cass, Calhoun, Morgan and Scott counties. The new facility will be located north of the Pittsfield Industrial Park on U.S. Route 54.

A check presentation was made today to JWCC President Mike Elbe and Barbara Holthaus, executive director of the JWCC Foundation.

“As a healthcare provider and a major employer in the same communities JWCC serves, we are pleased to support this campaign,” Carol Brockmiller, QMG chief executive officer said.  “This type of facility is crucial in rural communities and helps educate healthcare professionals and employees of the future and QMG wants to be part of that effort.”

JWCC’s Southeast Education Center provides all courses needed for students to become certified nurse assistants and the College plans to offer anatomy and physiology courses for students entering nursing and health science career fields. Through a combination of classroom and online learning, students may complete all the requirements for an associate degree with a wide variety of concentrations at the Southeast Center as well.

“QMG’s generous gift shows their commitment to healthcare education in rural communities,” Holthaus said. “We are incredibly thankful to have a community partner that invests today to ensure a quality workforce in the future.”

JWCC’s Serving the Southeast Campaign continues to accept donations to reach its $200,000 goal to provide technology, furnishings and equipment for the future Southeast Education Center. Donors interested in supporting the campaign may contact Holthaus at 217.641.4104 or bholthaus@jwcc.edu. All gifts to the JWCC Foundation in support of the campaign are tax-deductible.

Trustees Hear Report on Increase in College Credit Delivered in JWCC District High Schools

The John Wood Community College Board of Trustees, meeting in Quincy Wednesday evening May 17, heard a report on the increase in Smart Start concurrent enrollment credit hours delivered for students in JWCC’s 14 district high schools.

Concurrent enrollment provides high school students the opportunity to take college credit courses. JWCC’s Smart Start program includes dual credit, a course taken for high school and college credit, and dual enrollment, a course taken online, at a high school or at JWCC for college credit only.

Students in JWCC’s district high schools completed 2,951 Smart Start credit hours in the 2016-17 academic year, which is nearly double than 5 years ago when JWCC delivered 1,477 college credit hours to secondary students. John Wood offers a wide array of general education courses transferable to four-year universities as well as career, technical and health courses designed to help students train for specific careers and transfer into applied bachelor’s degrees.

The increase is the result of more offerings and funding partnerships throughout the district. The JWCC Foundation has connected with partners in Pike, Brown and Adams counties to help students at certain high schools defray a portion of tuition costs.  The top five college courses taken at JWCC by district high school students in the last three years were English, math, Spanish, communication and psychology. Offerings by high school and scholarship information are available at jwcc.edu/smartstart.

“Our district high schools asked for expanded, affordable opportunities for high school students to earn college credit prior to graduation,” Mike Elbe, JWCC president said.  “The Smart Start program can help students eliminate a year of college, which reduces the cost of earning a degree and decreases students’ overall debt. “We still have work to do, but we’ve responded to our district’s needs and are grateful for the many individuals, schools, businesses and foundations that have invested in the effort.”

In other business, the Board:

Received an update on the construction timeline for JWCC to move into a new, leased facility in Pittsfield that will become its Southeast Education Center.  The owner of the property is on schedule to complete interior and exterior work for JWCC to begin its lease on July 1.  JWCC will officially begin operations in the new facility in August.

Approved submission of a $195,470.23 application to the Illinois Community College Board for an Adult Education Continuation grant for fiscal year 2018. The grant provides instruction and support services for adult learners to obtain knowledge and skills for employment and self-sufficiency; attain a high school equivalency credential and assist English language learners in improving reading, writing, speaking and math skills.

SGA President, Madelyn Heinecke of Fowler, Illinois; Vice President, Seth Moyers of  Pleasant Hill; Secretary, Matthew Finlay of Ursa; Treasurer, Noah Lippincott of Pleasant Hill and Student Trustee, Clayton Thompson of Mendon. The new facility will be located north of the Pittsfield Industrial Park on U.S. Route 54.

A check presentation was made by Barb McTucker, Pittsfield Rotary President, to members of JWCC’s Southeast Advisory Council and Mike Elbe, president of JWCC, and Barbara Holthaus, director of advancement for the College.

“Rotary has always been about serving youth and our board unanimously agreed that we wanted to make a gift that would have an impact,” McTucker shared. “This is a big gift for our club, and we wanted it to be that way to show our support for what we feel John Wood’s new center will do for our community.”

JWCC’s Serving the Southeast Campaign continues to accept donations for the future Southeast Education Center. Donors interested in supporting the campaign may contact Holthaus at 217.641.4104 or bholthaus@jwcc.edu. All gifts to the JWCC Foundation in support of the campaign are tax-deductible.

Unity High School Foundation, District Partner with JWCC to Provide Welding Courses

$

Sean JusticeEighteen juniors and seniors at Unity High School learned valuable career skills and earned credit toward a welding certificate at John Wood Community College this year thanks to support from the Unit 4 School District and Foundation.

“We had several students interested in welding and manufacturing skills and our budget wouldn’t allow for a full-time instructor,” Unity High School Principal Bill Dorethy said. “So we looked for ways to make the best use of community resources and knew John Wood had a strong welding program.  One of their existing instructors came to us, which helped students gain skills and college credit.”

Students were able to earn up to nine college credits in welding.  One of those students, Sean Justice, has already used his new skills to land a job at Knapheide Manufacturing and will continue his education at JWCC in the fall.

The Unit 4 Foundation and district provided funding for the high school students to earn JWCC welding credits as part of the College’s Smart Start Program.  Other foundations and private businesses and organizations throughout JWCC’s district have also provided funding support to help students defray the costs of earning college credit at John Wood while still in high school.

“This partnership was a creative way to use public and private resources to help students gain the skills and college credit that could very well lead to a future career path,” Dorethy said.  “We hope to offer this opportunity every other year as funding resources allow.”

More information about courses and scholarship opportunities for high school students to earn college credit at JWCC is available at jwcc.edu/smartstart.

40th Anniversary Event Set for August 2 at University of Illinois Orr Center and JWCC Agricultural Education Center

JWCC Agricultural Center

Education and Research Improves Regional Farm Operations, Agribusinesses and Educates Next Generation of Ag Leaders

A celebration event on August 2 at 5 p.m. will mark the 40-year anniversary of the unique, innovative partnership between the University of Illinois Orr Agricultural Center and John Wood Community College Agricultural Education Center.

The event will include a presentation by a national speaker and the agronomy and beef research areas will be available for viewing.

Governor Jim Thompson in 1977 approved the appropriations that led to the historic agreement between JWCC and the University of Illinois to share educational and research facilities near Perry, Illinois.  This partnership is one of very few in the country between a flagship four-year land grant institution and a local community college.

The University of Illinois conducts agronomic and animal science research at the facility and JWCC provides instruction and training for agricultural certificates and degrees at the same location.

JWCC has educated more than 1,600 ag students since the facility opened. Each year more than 50 agronomic and animal science research and demonstration projects are conducted by University of Illinois campus-based staff and the station superintendent, supported by JWCC ag students and interns. The research includes soil chemistry and fertility, soil management, crop production, animal science, weed science, variety testing, and environmental quality.

“Thousands of farms, agribusinesses, and students throughout the west-central Illinois and northeast Missouri region have benefitted from the unique partnership that was created 40 years ago,” said Matt Bradshaw, chair of the non-profit Orr Corporation.  “The ability to creatively use the facility’s resources adds value to our communities through training and education of the next generation of ag leaders. The public research transfers new trends and technology directly to farmers so they can make informed decisions for more progressive operations and businesses.”

To RSVP for the event or for more information contact Mindy@bradshawpumping.com or 217.833.2944.

JWCC Trustees Approve Tentative Balanced Budget for 2018 Fiscal Year

$

John Wood Community College Board of Trustees approved a tentative $14,216,967 balanced budget for the next fiscal year during its regular meeting Wednesday, June 14.  The proposed 2018 budget, which begins July 1, is $15,000 less than the current year and the lowest since 2009.

Budget revenue includes a $3 tuition increase per credit hour for the 2017-18 academic year and the introduction of a four-week winter intersession. State funding for next year is projected to be $700,000, which is $111,000 less than the previous year’s budget figure.

State funding accounts for 5 percent of JWCC’s total revenue, tuition and fees make up 55 percent, property and corporate personal property replacement taxes are 35 percent and 5 percent is from grant, facilities and other revenue sources.

The tuition increase of $3, which will take effect in the fall of 2017, is below the reported average increase for all other Illinois community colleges for next year and maintains JWCC’s position as the region’s educational value choice. Due to low-unemployment rates and smaller graduating classes from JWCC’s district high schools, officials project students to take 42,000 credit hours next year, which is approximately 200 less than the current year’s totals. In-district tuition per credit hour will change from $139 to $142 per credit hour. The bump amounts to an extra $96 a year for in-district students taking 32 credit hours. JWCC’s average full-time,  in-district tuition cost of $4,544 for next year compares favorably with other public and private colleges in the region that have annual tuition and fees ranging from $11,000 to $44,000 annually.

JWCC will implement several cost-saving measures in the next budget year that will not affect students’ academic experiences.  Those measures include leaving vacant positions open, reorganizing duties to cover four eliminated positions and a four-day staff furlough during the holiday break.

JWCC is committed to balancing necessary changes with progressive plans and investment in current employees, so the budget includes funding for strategic initiatives focused on growing enrollment and faculty and staff salary adjustments.

“Our goal is to remain a growing, progressive institution focused on student success as we deal with the challenge of the two-year state budget impasse,” Michael Elbe, JWCC president said. “As we look ahead to next year and beyond we will work to find new sources of revenue, continue our conservative, fiscal management practices and search for ways to become more efficient and effective in our operations.  We are committed to maintaining relevant programs and services to deliver the very best academic experience for our students and their success.”

The 2018 budget will remain on display for 30 days for public review.  The budget will be formally adopted during the July Board meeting.

In other business, the Board:

Adopted a resolution to comply with the Prevailing Wage Act for public works construction projects at the College.

Approved renewal of the United Way of Adams County Partner Agreement for the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) hosted by JWCC.

Approved a Resource Allocation Management Plan (RAMP) document submission to the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) to expand JWCC’s Workforce Development Center (WDC). A RAMP document must be filed annually for JWCC capital projects to be considered for State of Illinois matching funds.  Trustees originally filed the WDC RAMP document in 2014.

Approved $6 million level for the School Treasurer’s Bond with The Hartford through the Illinois Community College Risk Management Consortium.

Authorized acceptance of grant funds for $257,500 annually over the next five years from the Department of Education for the Upward Bound TRiO program to help at-risk, low-income and first-generation students complete high school and enter college.  The program specifically serves students in Griggsville-Perry, Meredosia, Pittsfield and Quincy Senior High schools.

Approved $58,412.45 in tuition and fees, bookstore and miscellaneous write-offs from the prior 18 months to two-year period. The amount is $18,570.41 less than the previous year due to retention efforts instituted by personnel in the College’s financial aid and business offices. JWCC will continue to seek payment on write-offs through a collection service.

Authorized submission of a $111,766 grant application to the Illinois Community College Board for Perkins funding for direct student aid and tutoring assistance for students in career and technical programs as well as purchase of instructional supplies. Previous funding benefitted 200 students in career and technical programs. Trustees also authorized submission of two additional $10,000 grant applications to ICCB for Perkins funding.  One to enhance services to individuals meeting Perkins special population requirements, and another to assist with career and technical equipment and special project needs.

Approved serving of wine during Serving the Southeast Campaign donor reception.

Approved payment of $3,938 for the first half of Illinois Community College Trustee Association dues.

Authorized submission of a grant application in a range between $7,000 to $10,000 to the ICCB to develop and promote new and enhanced dual credit courses for high school students.

The next regular meeting of the JWCC Board of Trustees is July 19 at the JWCC campus in Quincy.

Reggie ColemanThe Illinois Community College Trustees Association (ICCTA) recently honored former John Wood Community College Trustee Reggie Coleman with the ICCTA Certificate of Merit. This award is presented to persons who have made a significant contribution to the ICCTA, the Illinois Community College System or an individual member college.

“We are pleased to honor Reggie for his many years of dedicated public service, and we hope that he continues to be a strong voice for our community colleges,” said ICCTA vice president Jim Endress.

Coleman was first elected to the JWCC board of trustees in 1999, and helped guide the College through several presidential transitions and difficult financial times. He was a part of JWCC’s evolution from it’s former home in a converted elementary school to its current state-of-the-art facility.

Coleman also contributed to the growth of the statewide community college system, and chaired ICCTA’s West Central Region, led its Diversity and Trustee Education committees, and earned four trustee education awards. He served as ICCTA president from 2012-2013, and made a point of reaching out to new trustees and mentored most of the association’s current and upcoming officers. Coleman retired from the JWCC board in spring 2017.

College for Life Students The dream of going to college will become a reality for Mercedez Farmer and Gena Mann this fall.  They are the first students to enroll in College for Life, a new pilot program launched by John Wood Community College to provide a post-high school educational experience for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Farmer, 22, and Mann, 19, are both graduates of Pittsfield High School and have been waiting years for an opportunity to take the next step on their educational path.

“I always dreamed of being able to go to college, and never thought it could happen until John Wood started this,” Farmer shared.  Mann summed up how she feels about the College for Life program in one word.  “I feel proud,” she said.

Their mothers are just as excited to be able to see their daughters further develop their knowledge and skills beyond high school.

“We are so thrilled,” Becky Mann said.  “It has been great to hear Gena tell others that she is going to college.”

“This is exactly what we have been looking for,” Mercedez’s mom, Karen Fesler shared.  “We have been looking for something like this for over a year and are so thankful John Wood has given us this opportunity.”

The initial pilot class will be limited to 10 students and begin August 21.  Students will take at least three non-credit courses through JWCC’s Community Based Outreach Office designed to prepare them for a fulfilling adult life as contributing members of their communities.  All students will be required to take a self-advocacy course and all courses will include a learning coach who will provide classroom support to ensure everyone’s success.  Students may choose from other courses covering sports/fitness, healthy relationships, cooking and career exploration topics.

“The courses are designed to have ongoing participation, so students can enroll as long as they would like, or build their knowledge and skills to move on to college credit-bearing classes as part of a certificate or degree,“ Michele Westmaas, College for Life instructor said. “Since this is a pilot program, we have the flexibility to change things as we go to make the experience the best it can be.”

Students will also have opportunities to take part in all aspects of JWCC student life, including social and extra-curricular activities to help students benefit from increased independence as they navigate campus, participate in CFL courses and become part of the JWCC student body.

“The beauty of this program is that for the first time these students will have the opportunity to take the first step into college to develop their skills and gifts to make meaningful contributions to our communities,” Westmaas shared. “Students like Mercedez and Gena have so many ways they can make a difference in the lives of others; we just need to give them a path to make it happen.”

Instructors for the program are eager to bring their passion, expertise and knowledge to help students grow in their respective content areas.  Along with Westmaas, instructors include a wide variety of professionals who bring a wealth of experiences to benefit students.

“John Wood’s mission is to make education accessible to all members of the communities we serve and to promote lifelong learning for everyone,” Diane Vose, JWCC manager of regional centers and community based outreach shared. “Before this program, inclusive educational programs after high school didn’t exist. College for Life is another way to help students keep learning and growing, which benefits the entire community.”

The program is intended for students 18 years of age or older with a diagnosed intellectual/developmental disability. Cost per course is $250.   Courses are 50 minutes in length and run between 9 a.m. and 2:50 p.m. from August 21 to December 8.  Registration is currently underway.

JWCC is also seeking support from individuals and businesses to provide funding for first-year start-up costs or student scholarships. The College projects student tuition to sustain the program after successful completion of the pilot year. Westmaas and Vose are also available to make presentations on the College for Life program to provide more information and answer questions.

More information is available by contacting Westmaas at 217.641.4941 or mwestmaas@jwcc.edu or visiting www.jwcc.edu/collegeforlife.

JWCC Creates New Online Truck Driver Training Class to Help Meet Industry Demand

New course can streamline training time; help more prospective drivers start career sooner

Quincy, Illinois - John Wood Community College has created a new online truck driver training class to help students quickly enter the industry or train while maintaining a full-time job.

The eight-week Introduction to Truck Driver Training online course is the only one of its kind in the region and covers the classroom component required for the non-credit certificate program.  The online class decreases the amount of time students need to be on campus to complete training.  Students will learn basic information needed by a truck driver and receive an overview of vehicle braking, electrical, mechanical and air systems and Department of Transportation rules and regulations.

Hands-on driving instruction required in addition to the online class can be arranged on weekends and evenings to allow students to continue to work while training.

“This online class can be a game changer for people who want to enter the career, but have to work full-time while training,” Casey Ragar, JWCC truck driving instructor said.  “They can fit in the online class in the evening, or even work ahead and complete the class in less than eight weeks if they are really motivated.  The time in the truck can be done outside of their regular work week, and could be completed in a few weekends or several evenings.”

Since the classroom component is offered online, students from outside JWCC’s district can complete it anywhere and potentially visit the College’s Workforce Development Center in Quincy on weekends to finish hands-on driving instruction. JWCC may work with students to arrange housing during training.

Current industry needs far exceed the number of available truck drivers across the country, and specifically in JWCC’s district.  More than 200 positions are open in the region for trained truck drivers, which pay $40,000 to $50,000 average starting salaries.  Companies have also restructured deliveries to offer shorter, localized routes and changed some driver schedules to allow for three or more days at home each week.

During an average year, JWCC trains approximately 60 students in its truck driver program, which is certified by the Professional Truck Driver Institute. Graduates of JWCC’s program are heavily recruited by many prominent companies, and most students are offered employment upon completion.

Funding may be available for students from Dot Transportation, Inc. or Sharkey Transportation. Students 18 to 23 may qualify for funding through the Workforce Investment Act program.

The next information session for the JWCC truck driver training program is August 7 at 6:30 p.m. at the JWCC Workforce Development Center at 4220 Kochs Lane in Quincy.  Students interested in the online course may contact lewis@jwcc.edu 217.641.4971 or visit www.jwcc.edu/truck

Students may begin the next session of the program and online course August 28.
