Class teaches youngsters how to design and create their own products

John Wood Community College will offer “Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajigs” to students 12- through 16-years of age this June at the JWCC Workforce Development Center, located at 4220 Koch’s Lane in Quincy. The program will run Monday to Friday, June 17 through 21, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each day. The classes are a part of JWCC’s JDub Academy, a summer program that offers hands-on learning opportunities to children in grades K-12.

“Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajigs” will teach students the process of manufacturing, from making prototypes to actual production. The program is based on science, technology, engineering and math education, also known as STEM. Real world experts will speak to the students about entrepreneurship throughout the week, and students will design and manufacture a product using various welding techniques. The class will also tour a company to see how manufacturing takes place.

The class costs $120 per student, and lunch is provided each day. The program is a partnership between JWCC and The Foundation of the Fabricators and Manufacturers Association, International. Instructors are Ronnie Kraft and Ryan Willing. Additional JDub Academy classes may be found at jwcc.edu/jdub-academy. To register, contact JWCC’s Community Based Education at 217.641.4941 or email communityed@jwcc.edu

Introduction to Black History will cover African American history from the African background to the present. The course will explore dimensions of the African American experience and highlight the multifaceted ways they made their own history while simultaneously shaping and contributing to the history of the United States. This online class will be instructed by David Harbin, assistant professor of social/behavior sciences.

Introduction to Sports Management will provide insight on management and promotion of athletics and current topics related to health, physical education and recreation. This classroom course will be instructed by Ivan Paul, assistant professor of natural sciences.

Introduction to Content Management Systems will cover topics such as planning a website’s content and layout, preparing online media, installing WordPress, WordPress themes and plug-ins, website creation and more. Early Childhood Gateways Level 2 Certificate courses will take place this fall and spring. Classes will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:00 a.m. until noon. Courses in the fall will include Foundations to Early Childhood, Health & Safety for Young Children and Caring for Infants and Toddlers. Students who earn Illinois Gateways credentials improve their opportunities for employment and potentially increase Gateways scholarship opportunities and transfer to Illinois four-year institutions.

All classes begin on August 19. To register, visit jwcc.edu/register. For more information on these classes, contact JWCC’s Advising Department at 217.641.4355 or email advising@jwcc.edu.

JWCC Trustees Approve Tentative Balanced Budget with Tuition Freeze for 2020 Fiscal Year

$

John Wood Community College Board of Trustees approved a tentative $15,539,874 balanced budget for the next fiscal year during its regular meeting Wednesday, June 12.

Although the budget is $551,592 higher than last year, it does not include an increase in tuition or institutional fees  for in-district, out-of-district and online instruction. This is the third straight year JWCC has frozen tuition for students.

In addition to the tuition freeze, the budget increase is based on strategic planning investments, enrollment initiatives and College contractual obligations.

More than a dozen enrollment initiatives are part of the 2020 proposed budget, including the continuation of the Missouri Plus Scholarship to attract students into career and technical programs and efforts to boost enrollment in JWCC health sciences programs.

“Our board continues to balance its conservative approach with progressive investments in strategic initiatives,” Michael Elbe, JWCC president said. “Holding the line on tuition as much as we can should help more students access higher education at an exceptional value. Funding plans to boost enrollment, especially in programs that lead to key workforce sectors, will help us experience some growth in a very challenging environment.”

Increased revenues are based on a projected 42,400 credit hours, which is 250 more than the current year’s budgeted amount, flat state funding and property taxes.

The 2020 budget will remain on display for 30 days for public review.  The budget will be formally adopted during the July Board meeting.

In other business, the Board:

  • Accepted a $12,000 grant from the Illinois Board of Higher Education to fund a portion of student internships.
  • Approved $6.4 million level for the School Treasurer’s Bond with The Hartford through the Illinois Community College Risk Management Consortium.
  • Approved $36,606.29 in tuition and fees, bookstore and miscellaneous write-offs from the prior 18 months to two-year period. The amount is a 10-year low and $11,987.14 less than the previous year due to retention efforts instituted by personnel in the College’s financial aid and business offices. JWCC will continue to seek payment on write-offs through a collection service.
  • Approved a consortium agreement between John Wood Community College and Moberly Area Community College to provide additional shared on-line courses.
  • Authorized entry into a one-year sublease agreement with the University of Illinois Extension for space within JWCC’s Mt. Sterling Education Center.  The agreement contains two successive and one-year automatic renewal options.
  • Approved a Resource Allocation Management Plan (RAMP) document submission to the Illinois Community College Board (ICCB) to expand JWCC’s Workforce Development Center (WDC). A RAMP document must be filed annually for JWCC capital projects to be considered for State of Illinois matching funds.  Trustees originally filed the WDC RAMP document in 2014.
  • Adopted a revision to Board Policy 524 regarding shift differentials of non-exempt employees.
  • Adoption a revision to Board Policy 310 regarding Unit of Credit to add a reference to Illinois Community College Board Administrative Rules Section 1501.
  • Adopted a revision to Board Policy 528 regarding employee service awards.
  • The next regular meeting of the JWCC Board of Trustees is July 17 in Quincy.

JWCC Promotes National Logistics Day with Career Guides, Scholarship Promotion and Truck Display

What if Amazon couldn’t make good on its one-day shipping promise? Without students entering logistics and supply chain management programs this everyday occurrence could be in jeopardy.

That’s why John Wood Community College based in Quincy, Illinois, a Midwest transportation hub,  is joining the June 28 National Logistics Day effort to increase awareness of opportunities in the industry.

The College has created two quick guides for potential students to see if their interest and skills match those of the industry and is promoting an existing scholarship opportunity available for Quincy students entering logistics fields at www.jwcc.edu/quincypromise.   JWCC will also display trucks in front of its Quincy campus as a symbol of the need for drivers in the region on June 28.

Logistics and supply chain management span numerous industries including warehousing, distribution, transportation, manufacturing, diesel technology, welding, industrial technology and heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration.

College graduates and professionals in the field are in high demand within JWCC’s district, across the country and throughout the world.

In the Quincy region alone, 100-plus manufacturers rely on individuals with logistics skills and 13 trucking firms could fill 200 driver jobs right now. Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP) data show that trucks transport at least 70 percent of consumer goods in the United States.

“Whether it’s a container of freight from overseas or goods manufactured in the United States, a truck was used to transport and people coordinating the movement,” Glen Bemis of Quincy-based transportation firm Sisbro Incorporated shared. “The Quincy area is in a strategic location for transportation. The demand for truck drivers and trained people in logistics continues to grow. Having a path to obtain these skills locally provides a big advantage to those entering this field obtaining good paying jobs along with providing the workforce needed to the companies.”

Logistics businesses account for 8 percent of all manufacturing and sales in the United States according to CSCMP and the industries produce $800 billion in revenues according to industry research conducted by Armstrong & Associates.

“Logistics touches every industry, and the skills learned in these programs will help new students gain access to a field that has great career opportunities,” David Hetzler, JWCC interim dean of career and technical education shared.  “Individuals who are currently working in transportation, warehousing or manufacturing companies can take online classes to advance their careers and enter supervisory or management level positions without missing work.”

JWCC launched its logistics and operations management certificate and associate degree in 2015 and made both programs more convenient by placing all courses online in 2017.

All related logistics programs (manufacturing, diesel technology, industrial technology and HVAC) at JWCC also have some online courses and many classroom-based classes are offered in the evening and through open-learning lab environments. JWCC’s Southeast Education Center based in Pittsfield began offering truck driver training courses last fall to extend the opportunity to interested students in the more rural parts of the College’s district.

The first two years of a supply chain management bachelor’s degree are also offered at JWCC, which transfer regionally to Quincy University and Western Illinois University as well as universities across the country.

“Transportation and Logistics are a major industry in our region,” Marcel Wagner, president of Great River Economic Development Foundation said.  “TDL is a critical component of the manufacturing process.  Bringing in raw material from suppliers and delivering finished goods to customers.  Transportation and logistics positions provide great head-of household income, long term employment potential and the ability to live and work in our community.  Training for a TDL position, whether it be driving, doing mechanical work or handling product can all be accomplished at John Wood at a very affordable cost.”

New students entering JWCC’s diesel technology program who live in Quincy’s 62301 or 62305 zip codes may apply for up to $3,000 in scholarships this fall through the Quincy Promise program.  The program is privately funded by Quincy area industries in search of JWCC graduates with specific career and technical skills.

“We can use multiple technicians right now to service trucks we are one of 13 transportation firms in the Quincy area, not to mention farm equipment dealerships,” Casey Ragar of Sharkey Transportation shared.

The average starting salary of diesel technicians is around $40,000 or $20 an hour plus benefits.

JWCC launched the program in 2017 to respond to the need in the workforce. The eight-class certificate program includes courses in diesel technology, hydraulics, pneumatics, technical math, manufacturing, industrial safety, maintenance and repair welding, and speech. Diesel technology I and II are taught in partnership with the Quincy Area Vocational Training Center (QAVTC).  All other courses will take place at JWCC.

Students completing the certificate program can enter the workforce to repair farm and heavy equipment in a wide range of industries.  JWCC students have job offers prior to graduation.

“The Quincy Promise Scholarship may pay up to half of tuition, and if students qualify for any state or federal grants, the entire cost may be covered,” Dave Hetzler, interim dean of career and technical education shared.  “One year of potentially free training and a $40,000 job waiting at the end is an incredible opportunity.  We want to get this word out to students of any age in Quincy, especially those considering a career change.”

The scholarship application can be found at www.jwcc.edu/quincypromise and more information  is available from JWCC admissions at 217.641.4337 or admissions@jwcc.edu.  Additional career and technical programs at JWCC may also qualify for Quincy Promise funding.
